Southwest Airlines to Start with Assigned Seating in 2025

Starting in 2025, Southwest Airlines will introduce assigned seating, marking a significant shift in the airline’s boarding process. Known for its unique open-seating policy, Southwest has allowed passengers to choose their seats on a first-come, first-served basis for years. However, with the introduction of assigned seating, the airline aims to enhance the travel experience by offering more structure and convenience to its boarding process. This change opens up new possibilities for travelers, from premium seating options to improved family seating arrangements. Here’s what to expect from Southwest Airlines assigned seating and how it may impact your future flights.

Good news for flyers with Southwest Airlines Assigned Seating:

Southwest Airlines has announced plans to start selling tickets with assigned seats, with the rollout expected to begin in the second half of 2025. The first flights with this option will take off at the beginning of 2026. This decision comes in response to overwhelming customer feedback, where about 80% of passengers indicated they preferred assigned seating.

Southwest Airlines assigned seating marks a significant shift from its traditional open-seating policy, which has been a hallmark of the airline since its inception. This new approach aims to improve the travel experience, particularly for those who value having a designated seat.

In addition to Southwest Airlines assigned seating, the airline will introduce premium seating with extra legroom to offer more comfort for travelers. Passengers can also expect improved boarding experiences, expanded international partnerships, and new routes launching in 2025.

A Big Change for Southwest

This shift marks a significant departure from Southwest’s long-standing open-seating policy, which has been in place since the airline’s inception. The decision is part of a broader strategy to enhance the travel experience, especially as the airline faces pressure on its earnings in recent quarters.

“We have spent several years building the foundation for our transformation,” said Ryan Green, Executive Vice President of Commercial Transformation at Southwest. “We are excited to evolve—to continue doing what makes us unique while responding to what our customers want.”

In addition to assigned seating, Southwest will introduce premium seating options with up to five additional inches of legroom on about a third of its flights. Passengers opting for these premium seats will also enjoy priority boarding, offering an extra perk for those willing to pay a little more.

The airline is also expanding its international partnerships, starting with Icelandair, and will offer new flights from Baltimore-Washington International Airport in 2025. Plus, Southwest will introduce a new vacation package option called “Getaways by Southwest” and make updates to the Rapid Rewards program.

Smoothing Operations

Along with these changes, Southwest plans to launch red-eye flights in February 2025 and is working to reduce plane turnaround times to improve efficiency. However, not everything is changing—Southwest’s popular policy of allowing two free checked bags remains intact.

Conclusion – Southwest Airlines Assigned Seating

As Southwest Airlines embarks on this exciting new chapter, travelers can look forward to a more organized and comfortable flying experience. With the introduction of assigned seating and other new features, flying with Southwest will become even more appealing!
